About.com recalls Opera's CEO's swim stunt with the launch of Opera 8

April 27, 2007

Over at the Swimming section on About.com they recently mentioned Jon von Tetzchner, the founder and CEO of Opera, and his quest to swim across the Atlantic Ocean from Norway to the US after downloads of the then newly released Opera 8 exceeded one million in the first four days.

Btw, here is how the Seattle Times summed up the stunt:

“Various Microsoft executives have swum in “Lake Bill” over the years, celebrating product launches and other milestones with a dunk in the pond in the middle of the Redmond campus.

But none of those splashdowns compares with the stunt announced last week by Opera Software Chief Executive Jon von Tetzchner. He pledged to swim from Norway to the U.S. — stopping only for a cup of hot chocolate at his mother’s house in Iceland — if a million copies of the new Opera browser are downloaded in the first four days of its release.”

That’s right, CEO Jon failed to deliver, big time…

(my deepest condolences goes to those Investors tricked to pay 32,50 a share 1 year ago)

Jesus, is there a way this *Investor* guy comments something without mentioning shares/market/money?.

Hmm… this IS really old news. The article you refer to was as far as I can see published just after the PR-stunt itself. When was that …? In 2005? Time flies…

    Torvesin, don’t feed the troll.

  5. April 28, 2007 at 10:55 pm

    @Torvesin, he’s an investor… what do you expect…. 🙂

@Joar, I was under the impression that it was published recently, since it just showed up in my feed reader.

    don’t feed the troll

Who’s the troll??? Investor is an active member of the Opera community; we need more people like him.

“Investor is an active member of the Opera community; we need more people like him.”

Well, care to explain how posting/flooding a lot of off-topic comments about shares/stock in my.opera forum threads is valuable?.

I guess this was exactly what the my.opera forum rules tried to avoid?. Surely you are not encouraging this behaviour, right?. 🙂

    Lake Bill…where is it?

  9. April 30, 2007 at 6:59 am

This topic was not about me. It was about CEO’s promise to swim to the US. Well he failed to deliver, big time… Imagine how many downloads Opera could have had, if the CEO had promised to keep on swimming, as long as daily downloads stayed above 1 million ?.

While remembering past happenings, how could I forget my colleagues who have suffered huge losses, thus deserving sympathie ?.

BTW… Opera’s Investors are Trolls… Hmm… interesting logic. Wouldn’t be very profitable, would it ?

As for My Opera. Indeed, the community is a valuable Opera asset, provided freedom to post. Discussions about anything and everything creates alot of search business. Thus opera should encourage that.

Thanks Daniel, for not shooting messengers 😉

CEO Jon, no personal offence. Going forward, remember, we got bills to pay too 😉

“BTW… Opera’s Investors are Trolls… Hmm… interesting logic. Wouldn’t be very profitable, would it ?”

No one claimed that, he said you were a troll. The fact that you are an investor – or a mailman for that matter – doesn’t mean anything at all, your posts do; and honestly, misrepresenting posts and using fallacies as you have done above does qualify a poster as a troll…

“As for My Opera. Indeed, the community is a valuable Opera asset, provided freedom to post. Discussions about anything and everything creates alot of search business. Thus opera should encourage that.”

You have been warned about your completely off-topic posts in my.opera forums, you know, those messages about shares and market you post in threads where the OP is just asking for technical help.

  11. April 30, 2007 at 11:50 am

Hmm, doesn’t the troll occupy a significant place in Norse mythology? I’m just sayin’…

    Warned ? Prove it.

    From jax:
The investor debate is way off-topic, and split into a separate thread (though I missed a few above).

Discussions about anything and everything creates alot of search business.

But they make it harder to find relevant information.

Stick to the D&D forum with your stock talk, dude.

  15. May 1, 2007 at 11:51 am

    Off topic (rebuttal)

    So no *warning*.

Moderator @jax was kind enough to honor mine and @HaJotKE’s request to have rebuttal stopped, or moved to D&D. Ref. last posts, and marking my rebuttal posts off topic.

You, My_name_is_mud, alias Niqhead, alias Nelson, alias ??? got the order to “… desist calling people liars and a troll…”. Ref. your own evidence above. Still you continue.

Changing and operating under several usernames, is your strategy to pollute the Forum and insult good customers, and hoping to get away with it.

    You don’t fool me.

Btw. @Tadaaah!… feel better now ?

“…Posted by ey using Opera 9.50 on Windows Vista…”
    See my rebuttal (above).

    BTW… you are using Opera 9.50 ?????

    LOL@investor

Dude, with this conspiracy theory you are shooting yourself in the foot.

P.S I thought this blog entry would be quite boring (who cares about the Swimming-CEO anymore?, this is 2 years old) but you gotta admit that Investor is a good entertainer – I wonder if all norwegian investors are like this guy/gal, lol.

  18. May 1, 2007 at 3:59 pm

    Off topic (Rebuttal)

    ” conspiracy theory ”

Your claim, not mine. 1 person, Niqhead (former Nelson). He is well known back in the My Opera forum. He could ID here as the Pope, still I would recognize his post by unique style, words, content, and intent.

PS. why should I entertain you for free 😉

  19. May 1, 2007 at 4:33 pm

Hey people… let’s bring the topic back to Opera — not trolling.
