Microsoft's CEO's thoughts on acquiring Opera

January 6, 2006

Yesterday, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer was quoted saying to a Norwegian Newspaper is relations to the rumors about Microsoft buying Opera “in the first place, I do not know if they would be interested, and furthermore every government in the world would have reacted strongly if we did it.”

Why would the govt. get involved.

Indian firms acquire Chinese firms all the time.

    Our government (India) encourages it

Most countries have laws to stop companies eliminating any compatition thru buy-outs or mergers. The bad publicity alone would make things difficult for microsoft.

Is it just me or did he not deny that they would be interested in buying Opera?
Bad publicity? It would barely cause a blimp on mainstream news, and most people wouldnt know/care. The only people who would know/care are people who already have opinions on MS

He didn’t deny it. But Opera Software did.

Recently someone suggested that MS should simply buy Opera as a web browser for Vista. What do you think of that idea? Would you sell?

    Jon von Tetzchner:

I am not interested in selling out to Microsoft. However, if Microsoft is interested in including Opera with Windows, we would be happy to provide them with it. I do believe that would be positive for the web in general.” – http://interviews.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/01/03/147256&tid=95

The Governments would care because of the EU anti trust case against M$.

Why don’t you just stop this myth? 😉

Minghong: do you mean he should stop debunking it and just be silent on the topic? ‘Cause I haven’t seen Daniel suggest this was likely — anywhere. He reported Dvorak’s suggestion — with a “slim to none” analysis — then after the takeover rumor broke, he reported Opera’s denial, then a joke about “So, who’s next for the rumor mill?” Every post on the topic has been “No, Microsoft is not buying Opera, and why on earth did anyone take the rumor seriously in the first place?
