Opera's growing file size over time

July 12, 2005

With the recent addition of BitTorrent to the Opera browser, many have been wondering how this affects Opera’s download file size.

There is a misconception, for some, about Opera size given all of the additional features that come bundled with the browser.

Unlike Firefox and Internet Explorer (IE), which only come with a simple browser, Opera bundles with the browser an IRC chat client, an email client, RSS newsreader, and a slew of features to make browsing the web more enjoyable. And yet, with a download size of only 3.7MB, Opera is still smaller than Firefox’s 4.7MB.

Firefox, though a good browser, doesn’t come with most of the features that come standard with Opera. You must separately download extensions for the browser.

So how has Opera’s file size grown over time? Opera version 2 (released in 1996) had a size of 1MB making Opera 8 only 2.7MB larger. This is a major feat for Opera, given what is included with the download.

As Rijk points out Opera is growing in file size, but not anywhere near the rate of Moore’s law.

Below is a graph of Opera’s file size over time (courtesy of Rijk)

Update: According to one of Opera’s developers the size of Opera’s BitTorrent client has a size of only 24KB. (Thanks Jere for pointing this out)

To anonymous: the source of the image can easily be found by reading the article, and that wold be the right place to ask about usage rights.

Actually it would 0.03MB (assuming you round 24kb up). I find it facinating that they can keep it SO small. The use (as well as devvelopment) of Presto is proving to be such a smart move on Opera’s part mmore and more everyday.

P.S Love the graph, very visually informative.
