Two Million and Counting

May 3, 2005

After just two weeks since the release of Opera 8, more than 2 million copies have been downloaded.

The English version garnered the most downloads, totaling 1,337,899. The German version was the next most downloaded version with numbers totaling nearly 400,000.

The 1 million mark for Opera 8 was reached within 4 days of the release.

So where does Opera stand in its pace to reach 50 million downloads, in relations to Firefox? Well, Firefox reached the 50 million download mark after 24 1/2 weeks since its first stable release. This means Firefox had to have, on average, 2 million downloads every two weeks.

If the first two weeks are any indication, Opera will reach the gold mark at roughly the same time Firefox did.

Keep Opera’s download counter moving. Opera fans, spread the word.

Edit: As Blake Ross pointed out to me, my math is wrong, Firefox had on average of 2 million downloads every week not every two weeks.

Well, I wouldn’t compare Opera’s download rate to Firefox’. Remember that the rate of downloads per week will decrease naturally the longer it is since release date.

But still—I’m sure that Firefox’ 50 million downloads include everyone who upgrade to the point releases, thus being somewhat inflated with regards to unique downloaders.

You shouldn’t assume a constant download rate over 6 months. Take a look of the graph. It only took 3 days for Firefox to reach 2 million.

You shouldn’t have created this post if you has been following Asa’s blog. 😉

It does include manual updates (downloading from moz.org and installing) but updates done from within Firefox are not counted.

I’ve had a shot at estimating the size of the figure bloat over at my blog.

With all due respect, your math is wrong. You’re correct that Firefox 1.0 has garnered 50 million downloads in 24 weeks, but that would mean it has averaged 2 million downloads every week, not 2 million downloads every two weeks.

Indeed, this past week verifies that trend: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/fifty.html We were at 50 million downloads on 4/29/05 and now sit above 52 million.
