Opera 8 final released

April 18, 2005

After much speculation on when Opera 8 final will be released, it’s finally here. Opera Software has added Opera 8 final to its FTP directory.

Opera usually releases new versions to their FTP directory a day before it makes the official release. It does so as a last check to make sure there aren’t any major bugs. This is also a way for other mirrors to get their copy.

Opera 8 final is only available for the Windows and Linux platforms. As for Mac users, all you get is Opera 8 beta 1.

Note, if you have installed any preview or beta versions on your computer, do NOT install the final version over it. Do a clean install.

Opera’s FTP directory seems to be inundated by all of these downloads, here some mirrors:

ftp://ftp.hu-berlin.de/pub/www/opera/
ftp://ftp.130th.net/pub/mirror/opera/
ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/opera/

I will post more on this once more details emerge.

Take a look at this press release from January.

Towards the end of the first paragraph it says “Opera has yet to reveal the name of their newest browser version.”

Appearently Opera has decided to keep its name. Good choice.

FYI, it is primarily to upload it to the mirrors. The “last check” is just a bonus.

I can say that about new “cool” feature: since Opera 8 released, you have no real MDI – you can’t minimize or arrange cascade your tabs/windows. You can resize whole Opera window only 😦

You can resize the tab in the window by right clicking on the red X. It’s quite unintuitive.
